Post Concert Thoughts

This has been a great experience for me, though the journey wasn't always smooth sailing. From performer from 2005 (?) to volunteer last year, to organiser this year, the Homeschool Concert has always been an annual tradition for me. It was all worth it. From spending so much time on the website, managing the 16 Raw  Potatoes facebook page, to having fun at the meetings, Skype messages (and spam), it was awesome. And the concert itself was much more brilliant than I expected.

I think the highlight of the concert for us was actually realising that we had these Crew t-shirts specially (secretly) made for us. And pizza. And seeing all those cute kids.

I'm going to post the photos I took on the Yahoo Group (you have to be a member to view it I think), so keep a lookout! [first batch already uploaded!]

Being able to help organise this year's homeschool concert has been really enjoyable and though it takes a lot of work, I think it will be worth it.  Although each of us has a different role, we are all working towards the same thing.  I am in the art team (I helped to design our logo).  Hopefully this year's concert will be the best so far :)

Door to door t-shirt selling

The other day, another raw potato and I went door to door selling the SG50 t-shirts to help raise funds for our concert. It was the most tedious and depressing work I have ever done.

Door to door selling is hard. You feel unwelcomed and a burden to the person you are trying to sell to. They don’t want you there and you feel nervous because you have to talk to total strangers. It’s physically draining because you have to walk up stairs and from door to door in the heat of Singapore. Most doors were locked and there were no answers because the owners were at work. The majority of the other flats were in habituated by old folks. Most were quite kind and said that their children or grandchildren were too old for the t-shirts we were selling and that they would buy it otherwise. The others just said no thank you and shut the door. I must conclude that we had it quite easy; no one was exceptionally rude.

It would have been easier if the t-shirts had more sizes. We would have definitely sold more if there were adult sizes as well as the sizes we were given. Many friends of my mother said they would buy one is they had one in their size which we don’t.

I can say that this was an unsuccessful way of selling for us. For this type of sales you need to use things like food (biscuits, crisps, sweets, chips etc.). Things that would appeal to everyone. We have tried other types of marketing that have been more effective.

Social media doesn’t work very well. We plastered the t-shirt all over the Singapore Home School Yahoo forum and only sold 6 shirts. I sold none myself by putting it up on my Instagram and neither did another raw potato.

The way that worked best was actually personal contacts. I went through my mums contact book and messaged everyone who had kids telling them about the t-shirts and we sold 16 t-shirts. 80% of all the people we asked bought a t-shirt.

In total we sold 5 shirts that afternoon; they were all sold to people we knew personally. Door to door selling does not work very well for this type of products and is definitely not something I would not like to do when I am older as a job.

Raw Potatoes-from A  Potato's perspective

Raw Potatoes was fun overall. At the start, we were all like headless chickens who knew nothing on what to do. But as time passed, we started to grow brains. We started to plan properly. However, nothing’s perfect!. Some of us were VERY demanding and set unrealistic goals. Some of us were confused and did not know what to do. Some of us were awesome and led the team to make tough decision. In the end, we were transformed from raw potatoes to chips of tomorrow. YAY!!

How we got our name

7/31/2015

Hi there! Welcome to the blog section of this wonderful website (of course I’ll say that, I’m one of the people (or potatoes) who set up this website. 16 Raw Potatoes started this year, 2015. Why the name, you may ask? Well, during our first meeting we split up into groups of 3 or 4 to brainstorm for group names.

There were normal (and kinda bland) names like Singapore Homeschool Organising Team, as well as crazy names (from the boys, no doubt) like Spitting Minions and Raw Potatoes. Eventually, we voted on Raw Potatoes, and because there were 16 of us initially, we became 16 Raw Potatoes!

Oh yes, and even though there weren't just 16 of us, we remained 16 Raw Potatoes because #16isawesome. Look at football players who wore #16: Aaron Ramsey from Arsenal, Phillip Lahm previously for Germany National Team, Roy Keane previously from Manchester United...

It was really a random name, but we soon realised that it was (quite) meaningful. Why so? Potatoes have many many uses: potato chips (crisps), french fries (chips), wedges, mashed potatoes, potato soup, and many many more. We are potatoes. We are raw, fresh and green, and we have many things we can do. This is us, moulding today’s raw potatoes into tomorrow’s chips.

And this, dear reader, is how we, the 16 Raw Potatoes, got our name.

Homeschool Curriculum Fair

7/17/2015

Recently, us Sixteen Raw Potatoes have organised the homeschool curriculum fair, where parents as well as teachers come and share their ways of teaching. There were a few speakers who gave talks on various ways to manage and educate children, not only through reading and writing, but also through exercising, art and other extra-curricular activities. Different people came forward to share their different forms of schooling which help inspire other parents in ways to help their children.

This year, we were privileged to have three speakers from BRAHM Centre, Evolve Art, Jessie Lee - who gave speeches on Mindfulness, Performance Education and Pilates and Kids respectively. They gave insightful talks about exercising, working with children with special needs and other topics as well.

As a member of the Sixteen Raw Potatoes, I feel this has been a great experience for me, especially in organising events. I hope the curriculum fair was as fun and productive as I felt it was.
